Bump Diary is a private pregnancy diary for you and the people you invite. This page explains what we store, why, who can see it, and how to delete it.
The short version
- No adverts, no tracking, and we never sell your data.
- Your diary is only visible to the people in it.
- Daily check-ins are private unless you choose to share them. Baby-name votes stay hidden until you both like a name.
- You can export everything, or delete your account, from Settings → Privacy in the app.
What we store
| What | Why | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Your name and email address, and how you signed in (Apple, Google or email) | To sign you in | Auth0 (our sign-in provider). Our server keeps only your name and an account ID. |
| Photos, videos and scan photos | Your diary | Cloudinary (our media storage) |
| Due date, moods, captions, kick counts, answers to daily prompts, reactions and comments | Your diary | Our server |
| Health information you choose to log: symptoms, sleep, water, baby's movements and contractions | Check-ins, charts and the contraction timer | Our server |
| Appointments, hospital bag, birth plan, baby-name votes and your chosen hospital | Planning for the birth | Our server |
| Questions you ask Ask Bump, and its answers | To answer them, and so you can come back to a chat | The app asks you first whether Ask Bump may use AI. If you say yes, your question, the chat so far and your week of pregnancy are sent to Anthropic, whose Claude AI model writes the answer from NHS and GOV.UK pages and may search the web. Your name, email address and account are not sent with it. If you say no, answers come only from a guide we've written from NHS pages, on our own server, and nothing is sent to Anthropic. You can change your choice in Settings → Privacy and your data. Your chats are saved on our server so you can reopen them. Only you can see them: not the other people in your diary, and our team has no screen that shows them. You can delete one chat or all of them at any time, and they are deleted with your account. |
| The weekly story: a few lines about your week | To give your diary a short recap each Sunday | Off until you turn it on. If you do, the captions, prompt answers and shared check-ins you wrote that week, the week of pregnancy and a count of logged movements are sent to Anthropic, whose Claude AI model writes the story. Photos, videos, your name, your email address and check-ins you kept private are never sent, and nothing written by someone who hasn't turned it on is used. Our server keeps the story, and everyone in your diary can read it. You can turn it off in Settings. |
| Purchases of Bump Diary Plus | To give you, and the people in your diary, what you paid for | Apple takes the payment; we never see your card details. Our server keeps Apple's receipt: what was bought, when, and when it ends. We keep that record after an account is deleted, without the account attached, because the law requires financial records to be kept. |
| A push notification token for your phone | To tell you when your partner adds a moment, reacts or comments, and to send the daily update about your week of pregnancy (you can turn this off in Settings) | Our server and Apple |
| Your phone's model and iOS version, whether notifications are allowed, and a record of requests that failed for you (what the app was doing and the message you were shown) | So our team can see what went wrong when you report a problem | Our server only, linked to your account. Failed requests are kept for 30 days. They never include what you typed, your photos or your diary. |
| When you last used the app, which version, and counts of how often features are used | To fix problems, and to see which features are worth improving | Our server only. No analytics or advertising company receives it, and the counts are totals, not a record of what you did. |
| A record of the notifications we sent you | To check that notifications are working | Our server, for 90 days |
| Visits to this website: the page, which site sent you (for example TikTok), and whether you tapped the App Store button | To see how many people visit the website and where they found us | Our server only, as daily totals. No cookies are set and nothing is stored in your browser. Your IP address is used only to avoid counting you twice in one day, and is never kept: it's turned into a code that changes every day, so we can't recognise you from one day to the next. |
| Your email address, if you joined the launch list on our website before the app was released | To send you one email now that Bump Diary is on the App Store | Our server. We delete the list after that email goes out, and you can ask to be removed before then. |
Our server runs on DigitalOcean, in its New York data centre in the United States, so what our server keeps is stored in the US wherever you live. Daily reminders, supplement reminders, and blood pressure and weight readings (kept in Apple Health) stay on your phone and are never sent to us. Photos you haven't uploaded yet stay on your phone.
Who can see it
Only the people in your diary (up to four people you invite). We don't share your data with anyone else, except the services listed above, which store or process it for us. We only show your data to someone else when the law requires it.
Our team sees a moment or a comment only when someone in the diary reports it, or when a comment matches our word list. Comments are checked against that list automatically on our own server; nothing is sent elsewhere for the check.
When you ask us for help with your account, for example if you can't sign in or your diary seems to have gone, our team can look up the email address and sign-in method that Auth0, our sign-in provider, holds for you. We don't store it, and each lookup is recorded in our team's audit log.
When you report a problem or write to our team, the person replying may ask Anthropic's Claude AI to draft a reply. If they do, your report and your recent messages to us are sent to Anthropic for that draft. A person on our team always reads, edits and sends the reply.
Health information
Pregnancy and symptom details are health data. We only store what you choose to enter, only to show it back to you and the people in your diary. Bump Diary summarises NHS guidance but is not a medical device and does not give medical advice. If you're worried about yourself or your baby, contact your midwife or maternity unit.
How long we keep it
Your diary is kept until you delete it. Some records are removed automatically:
- Problem reports and content reports: 12 months after they are closed.
- Messages between you and our team: 12 months.
- The record of which days you used the app: 13 months.
- The record of notifications sent: 90 days.
- The record of requests that failed for you: 30 days.
- Our team's own log of what they did in the admin site: 24 months.
Backups of our database are kept for 14 days, so deleted data disappears from them within two weeks. We don't use cookies; see our cookie policy.
Your choices
- Export: Settings → Privacy → Export my diary downloads everything as a file.
- Leave a diary: Settings → Leave this diary. The last person to leave removes it.
- Delete your account: Settings → Privacy → Delete my account. This removes your login, your photos and videos, your reactions, comments, votes and check-ins. People still in your diary keep what they added. If you're the last person in the diary, the whole diary is deleted.
You can also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it. To do that, email easeup.gh@gmail.com. If you're in the UK, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Bump Diary is for adults expecting a baby.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
